LOS ANGELES: Straßenschlacht in USA! Trump tobt! Soldaten gehen gegen Demonstranten vor I WELT LIVE
Nach dem Beginn des Einsatzes der Nationalgarde im Raum Los Angeles ist es Medienberichten zufolge zu einer ersten Konfrontation zwischen Soldaten und Demonstranten gekommen. An einem Bundesgefängnis in der Stadt gingen Soldaten und Sicherheitskräfte des Bundes zum Teil mit Tränengas vor, um Dutzende Demonstranten zurückzudrängen, wie Fotos und Fernsehbilder zeigten. Auch Rauchgranaten und Pfefferspray seien eingesetzt worden, berichtete die «Los Angeles Times». Es war zunächst nicht klar, was den Vorfall ausgelöst hatte.
Wenig später gingen Dutzende örtliche Polizisten in der Nähe teils mit Schlagstöcken gegen Demonstranten vor, um sie aus der Umgebung des Bundesgefängnisses zu vertreiben, wie Livebilder des Senders CNN zeigten. Die Polizei erklärte auf der Plattform X, vereinzelt würden Flaschen und Steine in Richtung der Sicherheitskräfte geworfen, es gebe Festnahmen. Die Demonstration in der Nähe des Bundesgebäudes in der Innenstadt sei verboten worden und müsse aufgelöst werden.
Eine CNN-Reporterin vor Ort sagte, der Polizei gehe es wohl darum, die mehreren Hundert Demonstranten zurückzudrängen, um Zusammenstöße mit der Nationalgarde an dem Gefängnisgebäude zu vermeiden.
Trump spricht von «gewaltsamen, aufständischen Meuten»
Im Rest der Millionenstadt Los Angeles und den angrenzenden Gebieten schien am Sonntag zunächst weitestgehend angespannte Ruhe zu herrschen. Ganz anders die Rhetorik der Bundesregierung: US-Präsident Donald Trump etwa sprach auf seiner Plattform Truth Social von «gewaltsamen, aufständischen Meuten», die versuchten, Abschiebungen durch Beamte des Bundes zu verhindern.
Wegen Protesten im Raum Los Angeles gegen Beamte der US-Einwanderungsbehörde ICE, die auch für Abschiebungen zuständig ist, hatte Trump am Samstagabend (Ortszeit) die Mobilisierung von mindestens 2.000 Soldaten der Nationalgarde angeordnet. Dem US-Militär zufolge waren dort bis Sonntagmorgen bereits rund 300 Soldaten im Einsatz.
Kaliforniens demokratischer Gouverneur Gavin Newsom und die Bürgermeisterin von Los Angeles, Karen Bass, sahen keinen Grund für eine Mobilisierung der Nationalgarde. Es gebe genügend örtliche Sicherheitskräfte, eine Militarisierung werde nur zu mehr Spannungen führen, erklärten sie. Beide forderten die Demonstranten auf, friedlich zu protestieren.
